美연방하원후보 한인사회 구애

뉴저지에서 출마한 연방하원후보가 한인사회에 적극적 러브콜을 보내 눈길을 끈다.

 

미동부 한인 풀뿌리단체인 시민참여센터가 17일 뉴저지 연방 5지역구 연방하원 후보자 '조쉬 갓하이머(Josh Gottheimer)'와 면담을 가졌다고 밝혔다.

 

조쉬 갓하이머(41) 후보는 빌 클린턴 대통령 시절 최연소(23세) 연설비서관으로 활약한 주인공이다. 1975년 뉴저지 콜드웰에서 태어난 그는 명문 유펜에서 미국역사를 전공하고 하버드 로스쿨을 졸업했다. 2004년엔 존 케리 대통령후보의 캠프에서 정책을 담당했고, 힐러리 클린터 후보 외곽조직인 ‘Hillary for America’의 컨설턴트로 일했다.

 

 

 

그가 출마한 선거구는 공화당의 실세 스캇 가렛 의원의 지역구로 쉽지 않은 도전이 될 전망이다. 그는 한인유권자들이 자신를지지(支持)해야 하는 이유에 대해 “외교안보나 세금정책에 대해서는 가렛 의원과 차별점이 없지만, 가렛 의원은 커뮤니티를 위해 일하지 않고 극단주의자들을 대변한다. 이민자에 적대적이고 여성과 아이들에게 차별적”이라고 비난했다.

 

또한 가렛의원이 강성 보수집단인 티파티의 눈치 보기에 급급하다면서, 티파티의 정책은 코리안 어메리칸같은 소수계 이민자 커뮤니티가 찬성할 수 있는 성향을 가지고 있지 않다고 강조했다.

 

세금 정책에 대해 세금을 낮추는 것보다 더 시급한 것은 낸 세금을 커뮤니티를 위해 많이 돌려받는 것이 중요하다고 말했다. 그는 “연방세금 1달러를 내면 뉴저지주는 (사회간접자본, 교육, 복지 혜택 등) 평균 68센트를 돌려받고 웨스트 버지니아는 연방 세금 1달러당 4달러가 넘는 혜택을 돌려받는다. 그런데 뉴저지 5지역구의 경우 1달러당 고작 33센트를 돌려받고 있다. 이는 현직인 스캇가렛 의원이 지역구민들의 혜택에 관심이 없고, 혜택을 연방정부에 요구하지 않기 때문이라고 주장했다.

 

지역 경제에 대해 그는 스몰비지니스 오너의 아들로 성장했다는 사실을 환기(喚起)시켰다. 스몰비지니스의 중요성을 누구보다 잘 알고 있다는 그는 “경제 정책에 있어서는 정부가 주도하는 성장에 대해서는 반대하고, Private Sector가 주도하는 성장모델을 지지한다”며 “정부가 Private Sector들을 연결하는 가교의 역할을 잘 할수 있도록 하겠다”고 밝혔다.

 

 

 

그는 동성결혼을 지지하고, 소수자 및 이민자의 권리를 옹호하는 진보적인 성향이라고 밝혔다. 유태계 이민자 후손인 그는 “이 나라는 이민자의 나라이다. 미국이 어디서부터 시작했는지를 잊으면 안된다”며 는 것을 포괄적 이민개혁안에 관해 전폭적인 찬성의사를 천명했다.

 

당선이 된다면 스몰비지니스 등 지역경제발전에 도움이 되는 Financial Committee에서 일하고 싶으며, 북한, ISIS 등 국제 안보 문제를 걱정하기 때문에 Intelligence Committee에서도 일하고 싶다고 덧붙였다.

 

노인복지에 대해 한인커뮤니티가 문화적으로 노인을 보살피는 것을 잘 알고 있다며, “문화적인 이유가 아니라도 정부가 노인을 케어하는 것은 중요한 일이다. 당선이 되면 지역의 노인복지를 위해 할수 있는 일은 최선을 다하겠다”고 약속했다.

 

조쉬 후보는 이날 연방의원들이 워싱턴에서 국민의 이익을 대변하지 않고, 당과 당 그리고 의원들끼리 서로 싸우고 모욕하는 현실정치에 신물이 나서 직접 정치에 뛰어들기로 마음먹었다며 출마의 변(辨)을 밝히기도 했다.

 

4세와 7세의 자녀가 있는 그는 “7세의 딸에게 상대를 비방하는 내용으로 가득 찬 대통령 선거 후보토론회를 보여줄 수 없는 현실에, 더 나은 정치와 정부를 만들 수 있다는 신념아래 이번 선거에 임하고 있다”고 말했다.

Joshua S. Gottheimer is an American lawyer, speechwriter, and public policy adviser. He has been active within the Democratic Party as a speechwriter for Bill Clinton and as an advisor for the presidential campaigns of Wesley Clark, John Kerry, and Hillary Clinton. He has also worked for Burson-Marsteller, the Federal Communications Commission, Ford Motor Company, and Microsoft. He is currently running for the United States House of Representatives in New Jersey's 5th congressional district.

 

At the age of 16, Gottheimer served as a United States Senate Page for Frank Lautenberg, a Senator from New Jersey. Through high school and college, Gottheimer held internships with C-SPAN, the Secretary of the United States Senate, and Tom Foley, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

 

Gottheimer graduated from West Essex High School, the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard Law School. While he attended the University of Pennsylvania, he served on the rapid response team for Bill Clinton's 1996 reelection campaign. Gottheimer attended the University of Oxford for a year following Clinton's reelection. He joined the Clinton administration as a speechwriter in 1998, at the age of 23, working in the administration until its end in 2001. While attending law school, Gottheimer worked for Wesley Clark's 2004 presidential campaign, John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign, and Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign as an advisor. After the 2004 election, Gottheimer worked for the Ford Motor Company, and then became executive vice president for Burson-Marsteller. He worked for the Federal Communications Commission from 2010 through 2012, where he led an initiative related to broadband internet. He then joined Microsoft as a strategist.

 

Gottheimer is running for the House of Representatives in New Jersey's 5th congressional district, a seat held by Republican Scott Garrett, in the 2016 elections. After Garrett said that the National Republican Congressional Committee should not support gay candidates, Gottheimer began raising funds for his challenge with the help of Clinton allies and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair Ben Ray Luján.

 

Gottheimer has attracted more attention than previous challengers to Garrett due to his fundraising ability and ties to the Clintons. His campaign's 2015 financial filings, in which Gottheimer reported raising around $1 million through the end of September, showed that "about one dollar in six came directly from fellow alumni of the Clinton White House and campaigns...or from major donors and employees of consulting firms tied closely to the Clintons."
